When it comes to activities for kids, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) offers many fun and valuable lessons for them. Not only does it keep them busy, but it also teaches them valuable skills. These skills can be used both in and out of the classroom.

Although many parents may have heard about STEM for kids and its benefits, they may not know how to get their kids involved.  If you’re finding yourself in that group, here are 5 ways your kids can explore STEM topics.

Read Books

Reading is knowledge. No matter the topic, reading can give you the information you need to learn more. You can start off by getting the basic knowledge and then continue reading to expand on that. There are many different levels of books on various STEM topics.

Visit your local library or check out books online to explore STEM for kids. Your child may start in one area and then realize they like something else better. The idea is to just let them learn about different areas so they can decide which area they want to know more about.

Look for Real-World Mentors

One of the best ways to explore different STEM topics is to look for real-world mentors. If you’re lucky enough to know someone in the field, that’s great. If not, you can try to contact people at various groups and organizations. Many people are more than happy to teach about their area of expertise.

Check Out Camps

There are various summer camps and other camps throughout the year to help kids explore STEM. Doing a search in your area will help you develop a list of camps to choose from. Some camps focus on one area while others let kids explore many other STEM areas.

Once you narrow down your list, your child can decide which ones look most appealing. You may be surprised at what these camps offer students and how much they can learn in a short amount of time.

Get Involved in Afterschool Enrichment Programs

Afterschool enrichment programs are one of the best ways to learn about STEM for kids. These programs provide a consistent schedule to keep kids constantly learning. During these programs, kids also form friendships with their peers who enjoy the same topics.

Many programs let kids explore all STEM areas so they can see which one appeals to them most. As they explore, they learn to build on their skills. Many times they also learn how STEM is involved in their everyday lives in ways they may have never realized.
