Coding Classes For Kids

Coding is an important language to learn. With the demand for STEM workers continuing to increase, learning coding from an early age is a sure way to gain an advantage in today’s competitive career world. Kids code games, websites and more. They learn how computers work, exercise creativity by coming up with ideas for how their project will look and feel, and build resilience and perseverance when trouble-shooting their code.

Skills Learned: Resilience, Confidence, Internet Safety, Logic, Game Design, Beta-Testing

Kids can start at a level at any time. They will advance to the next level once they have finished all the activities in their current level or when they are ready to move to the next level.

Beginner Coding (Scratch)

Kids will learn everything they need to know to code their very own game: character development, animation, environment and level design, beta testing and, of course, coding.

Grades 3-5 & 6-8

No coding experience required

Intermediate Coding (Scratch)

The intermediate level of coding follows a similar system to learning any coding language, but with the benefit of the programs controlling characters on a screen rather than alphanumeric text. Some new capabilities that require a firm grasp of simpler functionality (like lists or clones) also get introduced to unlock even more impressive games.

Grades 3-5 & 6-8

Some prior coding experience required.

Advanced Coding: Website Design

In our Website Design program, makers learn the popular coding language, HTML, which is commonly used in web design. Students make their very own websites and learn core design functionality under the guidance of our experienced Maker Mentors.

Grades 3-5 & 6-8

Some prior coding experience required

Advanced Coding: Python

Do you use Google, YouTube or Dropbox? Did you know they are programmed using Python? Python is a popular text based programming language commonly used in the professional world. Learning this powerful and versatile coding language, kids will be well equipped for the future.

Grades 3-5 & 6-8

Many of our students do incredible things with their newly acquired computer skills.

Coding Program for Kids FAQ
Coding tells computers what they should do. It is a language that the computer understands. Coding for kids empowers kids to create digital technology, not just consume it. Coding allows kids to program their own video games, website, or app to whatever they want.
Yes! Coding not only teaches kids the valuable skill of actual coding, but it instills other skills. It teaches them about problem-solving and what to do if the code they originally built doesn’t work the first time. They also learn how to collaborate with others who may have some good ideas for them and vice versa. Coding also lets kids use their creativity to the max. You never know what you can create until you try.
Some people say kids can learn to code as young as age 5. Others say age 7 is more appropriate. It really depends on the child. If your child has the attention span at a younger age, you can give it a try. If it just doesn’t work out, you can always wait a year or two.
With MakerKids you can choose for your child to take a class weekly, daily, or through a private class. We also offer camps throughout the year that are also great ways to get kids interested in coding.
For your child to have everything they need to be successful in our Coding classes for kids, we recommend having the following items ready for each class:

  • A laptop or desktop (with 4GB+ RAM)
  • Internet connection
  • Working microphone and speakers
  • Keyboard and a mouse
  • Chrome browser
  • Webcam (optional)
