The New Year is upon us and with that comes the hope of new possibilities and opportunities. For many of us, that means trying new things, making resolutions, and setting goals. Although these may sound like tasks for adults, don’t be fooled; kids can also get in on the excitement too. If you want your kids to have a good new year, there are several things you can do as a parent to help make that happen. Let’s take a look.

Ask Them What Goals They Want to Accomplish

Helping your child set goals rather than make resolutions helps them to devise a plan to achieve those goals. Ask them what they want to accomplish over the next twelve months. Sit down with them and have them write it down. Next, have them list three ways they hope to accomplish those goals. From there, it’s time for them to start taking action to make them happen. While you’re there to encourage them, you shouldn’t be nagging them all the way. They need to learn that to accomplish a goal, they need to work on it by themselves. This can help them have a good new year.

Start Off Fresh

The New Year is a great time to make a fresh start. Help your child organize toys and other items. Look to donate anything they don’t use anymore. If they’re older, help them organize activities on a calendar or planner. Let the New Year be the time to see things in a new way and avoid clutter.

Introduce Them to New Hobbies

The New Year is a great time to introduce kids to new hobbies. Perhaps they’ve always wanted to try a sport or try an afterschool program that teaches STEM topics. Now is the time to get them involved. Try out programs and find the one that is the perfect fit. Do your homework and see what’s offered in your area. From there see which programs have the best reviews. Don’t be afraid to ask around either. You can get some great feedback and referrals from other parents and kids.

If you want to get involved in a program that teaches robotics, coding, or even new Minecraft techniques, call MakerKids. At MakerKids, we offer all of these programs for children in grades 1-8. Take advantage of our free trial class so your child can try out a MakerKids program for themselves and find out how exciting it is. Make the New Year the year you and your child become part of the MakerKids family.
