MakerKids Experience and Skillset

Empower the leaders of tomorrow with the skills and mindsets to change the world.

Project-Based Learning

Untap the power of Minecraft! Using something kids may already know and love, they will learn how to code, invent contraptions and even run their own server. Minecraft is an open canvas, which is perfect to create without physical barriers. While kids are in charge of their creations, they will also plan and design with others.

By learning by doing, especially through a familiar and enjoyable game like Minecraft, kids gain a deeper understanding of how computers work, design philosophy, problem solving and modifications.

21st Century Skills

Minecraft has a number of educational benefits, and helps kids learn skills that allow them to be better ‘netizens’. We use Minecraft as a gateway to bring kids from the alluring virtual world back to the physical world and the people around them, e.g. through 3D printing objects they’ve designed in the game — a design environment they are already familiar with.

We’ve been recognized for our expertise in teaching Minecraft — we received funding from Mozilla Hive to develop Minecraft curriculum resources for teachers, and developed a module that guides educators through teaching grade 3 students the Ontario Curriculum social studies unit of settlers in the early 18th Century using Minecraft, an engaging environment that kids get excited about.

The MakerKids Difference

Great Instructors

Our instructors are highly trained and come from various backgrounds, including engineering, theatre, music and design. They have worked at City of Toronto, P&G and YMCA. CEO, Jennifer Turliuk, attended the Graduate Studies Program at NASA’s Singularity University and business school at Queen’s University.

Space to Experiment

Our makerspace is a safe space for kids to experiment. Our instructors are first aid trained, police checked, go through rigorous training and assist lead instructors before teaching. Our mentors are trained to work with different learning abilities and behavioural issues. Kids work in groups, design on and offscreen and have time for games/park.

My boys flourish here and look forward to it every week. They show social skills improvement and more confidence since coming to MakerKids and finding their “tribe.” Happy children make me a happy and grateful mom. Thanks MakerKids for creating programs for my quirky, “outside the box thinking” boys.

I love that the kids take the lead on their projects and learn how to achieve their goals Absolutely the kind of things my kids are interested in exploring in a guided setting!

This MakerKids Graduate created her own Minecraft club at school and even leads the class.

Minecraft: Commands and Circuits

In Minecraft, Redstone is the equivalent of electricity. It is both an energy source and can be used to transmit information, allowing players to power their world and invent unique contraptions and interactive systems. We will cover the basics of electricity with real world and game applications. Kids can quickly start introducing objects like clocks, locks, hidden doors, traps, elevators, and more into their world.

Minecraft: Run a Minecraft Server

Students will be introduced to Java (a common programming language), networking, databases, and command line tools to build and manage their own Minecraft server. Students begin with computing and networking in a text based environment, which lay the groundwork of how the internet and computers work. They will set up servers through downloading files, running commands, creating scripts and editing config files.

Minecraft: Block and Item Design

Students are first shown what makes things in Minecraft look and sound the way they do. They’ll learn how to change the color and shape of items using image editing software and will have the chance to experiment with making the game look the way they want it to.  With the introduction of Java, kids explore how games are designed and created.

Students can make their own armour or weapons, think up brand new blocks and crafting recipes, and modify the looks and behaviour of some of the existing creatures found in the game.

Our classes are open to new and experienced kids of all backgrounds. With our small ratio of 1 instructor for every 8 kids, our instructors will be able to work with each child’s individual needs. We will provide all the materials needed for the program and activities, which may include laptops and any software. Kids may bring their own laptops.

What will my kid make?

While working with people in the real world collaboratively playing and building in the game, kids may create mods, Redstone contraptions and run their own server.
