Ontario Science Centre has closed its doors after 55 years of serving the public and providing access to many fun and educational science topics. The Centre was a destination for school field trips, camps, a school, and more – and served as an inspiration to businesses like MakerKids, who share the mission of bringing STEM to families.
Why did the Ontario Science Centre Close?
The Ontario Science Centre closed its doors on June 21, 2024, sooner than expected due to structural issues with the building’s roof, as well as an inaccessible pedestrian bridge. The centre’s Board of Trustees voted to close the building, based on a recommendation from the Ministry of Infrastructure and the CEO of the Science Centre. The move was made to ensure the safety of all visitors and staff.
The science center was slated to close at a later date to plan for its scheduled relocation from its current site in Toronto’s northeast to a smaller location on the waterfront on Ontario Place. The move was part of a plan to redevelop the Ontario Place area. The new science center is scheduled to reopen in 2028. Until then, an interim location is being sought.
Science Center Memories
The Ontario Science Center was home to many childhood memories and was known as a place that made learning about science fun and accessible.
Many of our MakerKids staff members and colleagues attended the science center and were inspired by its offerings, says Aimee Savard, Owner of MakerKids. “Visiting exhibits and taking part in many other events was a staple of many of the staff’s childhoods and we look forward to its potential reopening.” MakerKids’ students and staff were honored to participate in the science center’s recent robotics event for kids, seeing that we both share an obvious passion for STEM-related topics.
At MakerKids, we want STEM topics and classes to continue to be accessible for students so that they may learn all the skills that the exciting world of STEM has to offer. That is why we are running a promotion on our camps to help those who are looking for camp alternatives. Be sure to visit our website to learn more about the various camps and classes that MakerKids has to offer. OSC members who had a camp cancellation can reach out to us for an exclusive promotion by contacting us at [email protected].
