The school year is well underway which means now is the time to get your child on the right track for success. There’s no sense in waiting any longer. Setting good routines now will reap rewards for your children as the school year progresses.

Here are some tips to help your child achieve school success.

Set a homework time and place. We all know schedules change daily and your child may not be able to do their homework at the exact same time every day. But, setting a general time frame (before dinner or after dinner) will help your child stick to a routine. Some children do better if they get their homework done right after school, while others need a bit of a breather.

Also, help them find a place at home that is quiet so they can concentrate. This may mean taking away any phones or other screens until homework is done. While they may be comfortable lying on their bed doing homework, a chair and table is a better set-up because it will help with concentration.

Get involved. Know what your child is learning in school. Take an interest and ask questions. If your child sees you are genuinely interested, then they will be more likely to be interested as well. Let your child know that you are also there if they need help. While you’re not going to do the assignment, you can try to answer any questions that may pop up.

Send your child to school ready to learn. While children do need to take on responsibility as they get older, it’s your job to make sure they have the foundation to make them ready to learn. This means helping them get to bed on time each night as well as having a healthy breakfast. Sleep and food play an important role in your child’s school success. Studies have shown that children who skip breakfast do poorer in school than those who don’t. We all know if your children are sleepy, they will have trouble focusing in class.

Encourage interests beyond the classroom. If your child has an interest in math, science, or another subject, encourage them to follow that interest outside the classroom. This will not only help them get the most out of their lessons in class but will also give them the opportunity to see how those lessons play out in the real world.

At MakerKids, we encourage children to take their love for science, math, and engineering to new heights. Through coding classes for kids, robotics courses for kids and much more, your children will see how the lessons they are learning in class can be applied in the real world. It’s a recipe for success both in and out of the classroom. To learn more about our programs, call us at 877-769-6428.
