Mini Makers introduces kids to our core technology topics: Coding, Robotics, and Minecraft. Your child will get to work on a variety of projects each day in small groups. They will design their own video game, create robotic inventions, explore the 3D design world of Minecraft, and do STEM experimentation. Each day your child will build on the skills they’ve learned, leaving with transferable technical and social skills.

The daily cross-discipline exposure focuses on valuable skills and allows kids to see progress as their abilities grow. Their projects tie back to this theme to reinforce the importance of interconnectivity in technology.

Breaks and games are also included for kids to exercise their imagination, have fun and strengthen team-building.

Our Grade 1-2 camps are split between Beginner (no experience required) and Experienced (some coding experience) levels.

  • MiniMakers (Gr 1-2) Beginners: focus on introductory concepts in coding and robotics while experimenting with the fundamentals of electricity and programming in fun ways! Compatible with Chromebook
  • MiniMakers (Gr 1-2) Experienced: apply more elaborate concepts in coding, robotics & explore the 3D design world of Minecraft (day 4 and 5). MAC or PC required. Chromebooks are not compatible

Red Week or Blue Week: We have two different weeks of content for this camp – Red Week and Blue Week. For kids who have taken one camp (e.g. Red Week) and then take another (e.g. Blue Week), they will get to use the software platforms they have become familiar with to take on a whole host of different projects. The camps can be taken in any order.

Playing Minecraft on the MakerKids multiplayer server is a fun and social way for kids to gain fundamental desktop computer experience.  As kids become more adept at navigating and modifying the virtual 3D world, new challenges such as learning to run text based commands and utilizing redstone (Minecraft’s version of electronics) in their builds turns Minecraft into even more of an educational platform to help build transferable technical skills.

While we leverage kids’ interest in Minecraft as a gateway to introduce them to other STEM topics, just as important in a cooperative multiplayer game is the opportunity for teaching positive netizen, teamwork, and communication skills.

Coding is an important language to learn. With the demand for STEM workers increasing, learning coding from an early age is a sure way to gain an advantage in today’s competitive career world. Kids code games, websites and more. They learn how computers work, exercise creativity, and build resilience and perseverance when trouble-shooting their code.

Kids will learn everything they need to know to code their very own game: character development, storyboarding, animation, environment and level design, beta testing and, of course, coding.

Do you use Google, YouTube or Dropbox? Did you know they are programmed using Python? Python can be seen almost everywhere. Its design philosophy is readability and simplicity. Because of its ease, general purpose application and being open-sourced, many systems are coded in Python. It is a high-level programming language that can make websites, applications, videogames, microchips and more.

Python is a modern programming language that is growing in popularity faster than any other.  Unlike many languages that don’t care about spaces and indents in your code, Python uses this “whitespace” to help keep things organized.  The functions in Python are very English-like and it has a huge repository of libraries you can install to handle practically any task.

Students will leave with the ability to install Python, create scripts with commands used in real world computer science, parse files and play with strings (lists of letters). They will also grasp core ideas of shell computing and navigating/modifying the operating system via the command line interface (lower level means of communication with computer systems).

Students will create their own website and a graphical front end game using Python. They can even create chatbots, calculators and guessing games. We believe in learning by doing, especially doing something fun. Kids will work hands-on with others on activities, such as inspecting websites and using HTML.

Returning Makers who have taken a coding class with us before are welcome.  Note this course contains lots of reading and technical typing.

The websites you encounter every day are made up of at least three programming languages: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. These work together to define how the content on the server (text, images, videos, objects, etc) are displayed by a visitor’s browser.  When learning about websites the real knowledge lies in understanding the text based code itself, and we use it directly when making websites at MakerKids.

In our Make A Website Camp kids are led by a MakerKids Mentor through the basics of making a website.  Working on the same project session to session they continually add more features and functionality to their site learning as the create.  Starting with the skeleton structure and some common HTML elements, they progress on to style their elements with CSS, and finally take a look at dynamic content with CSS and a bit of JS.   By the end of the camp they will have made their very own website and have a better understanding of what is going on behind the scenes of every website they visit.  Kids will also see what else front website development is truly capable of if they commit the time and effort into steadily working on all the aspects of a long-term project.

In our Minecraft camps, kids learn how to make Minecraft even more awesome, how computers and servers work, and core computer programming concepts while collaborating with kids equally excited about Minecraft.

We use the incredibly popular game Minecraft as a medium to help kids build transferable skills such as coding, electronics, 3D design, servers, and more. We leverage kids’ interest in Minecraft as a gateway to introduce them to other STEM topics such as Robotics and Coding. Minecraft is also a great medium for teaching positive netizen skills and communication skills. Kids build amazing digital creations.

Red Week: Any Minecraft World Creation and Master Camp (Red Week or Blue Week) is appropriate for brand new or experienced makers. For kids who have attended a Blue Week before, they will get to use the software platforms they have become familiar with to take on a whole host of different projects.

Minecraft is a fun game to play, and this means it is even more fun to hack.  Thanks to open source tools that allow us to access the underlying game resources, there is no limit on changes you can make to the appearance, shape, or logic of things in the game.  Adding to and editing a game’s files requires an understanding of all the different parts and how they fit together, and this knowledge applies to all types of programs.

In our Minecraft Resources and Mods camp kids are led by a MakerKids Mentor through the basics of editing a Minecraft game file.  After an introduction to working with the easily customizable graphical images, they work on the same mod project session to session.  As each new feature, is added kids must address the new settings and learn how it will interact with all the other objects in the game.  By the end of the camp they will have their very own mod and a solid understanding of how Minecraft handles all the resources in its codebase.  Kids will also see how far the block-based coding of customized behaviour can really go, and what else mods are capable of if they commit the time and effort into steadily working on all the aspects of a long-term project filled with interconnecting assets.

Design the world around you! In our Robotics programs, kids design, plan, program, and build electronic inventions while using a robotics microcontroller (used by industry professionals) and learning how to code. Kids better understand how everyday objects around them work and have the opportunity to bring their ideas to life.

Kids make electronic creations that they previously only dreamed of. Make lights light up, motors spin, and code a ‘robot brain’ to make something awesome. Kids see the results of their code before their eyes. They realize that they can make things that others can use. Past projects: nightlights, motion-activated alarms, rovers, and more.
