At MakerKids we provide ongoing virtual classes that students can join from the comfort of home, at a time that works for you.

Are you looking for the perfect activity for your son or daughter?

Our live online STEM classes will quickly have them creating fun projects within a group of their peers at whatever level they are currently at. Our live instructors make sure that they get the help they need at exactly the right time.

Interested in online kids’ STEM classes and tutoring? Your child will learn the foundations of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), while building key social and change-making skills. Kids will create their own inventions in our weekly programs. Classes are 2 hour sessions once a week (4 sessions a month), after school or on the weekends. Sign up for the weekly timeslot of your choice and pay on a monthly basis.

Timeslots for our online STEM classes are limited, so register ASAP to avoid disappointment.

Live Instructors

Our online environment lets your child interact with the instructor much as they would in person. Video conferencing and screen-sharing capabilities allow teachers to work with participants in a group as well as individually.

Individualized Approach

We recognize that each maker learns best at their own pace. Maker-Mentors offer individual support and help with project design and debugging to each maker individually. The video conferencing technology we use allows instructors to view each maker’s work as needed.

Small Group Sizes

Groups have a maximum of 8 students per teacher.

Coding is an important language to learn. With the demand for STEM workers continuing to increase, learning coding from an early age is a sure way to gain an advantage in today’s competitive career world. Kids code games, websites and more. They learn how computers work, exercise creativity by coming up with ideas for how their project will look and feel, and build resilience and perseverance when trouble-shooting their code.

Kids will learn everything they need to know to code their very own game: character development, storyboarding, animation, environment and level design, beta testing and, of course, coding.

Scratch: Coding Video Games

Scratch is a programming language developed by MIT designed to give kids a fun and easy intro to coding along with an open and friendly community. With Scratch kids can use code blocks to address colourful and fun characters on a stage, but it is most definitely an actual programming language and not simply a game or animated story development environment.  This means that programming concepts must always be at the forefront and very rarely can fundamental gameplay functionality (say for example gravity) just be turned on and not manually coded. 

Badge Levels:

Kids can start into a badge level at anytime. They will advance to the next badge level once they have finished all the activities in their current badge level.

Scratch Beginner
Scratch has a kid friendly interface which students will quickly learn to navigate through.  After an introduction to events and the flow of code through loops, the focus during the beginner section is on programming different types of motion (including using the XY axis with absolute position). Throughout this, the huge volume of image resources and
“looks” modifying coding options included allows for lots of fun customization.

Scratch Intermediate

The intermediate section of Scratch follows a similar system to learning any coding language, but with the benefit of the programs controlling characters on a screen rather than alphanumeric text.   Events, loops, conditional statements, and variables are all covered as Scratch specific blocks like the detection of collisions, key presses, and colours, or controlling speech bubbles and sound are introduced in a very straightforward manner with lots of example games that the concepts can be utilized to create.

 

Scratch Advanced

With the basics covered the curriculum shifts to combining concepts into more complicated game behaviour types such as gravity, side scrolling, tracking velocity and acceleration, levels in a game etc.  Some new Scratch capabilities that require a firm grasp of simpler functionality (like lists or clones) also get introduced to unlock even more impressive games.

 

Scratch Experts

Kids do more complicated concepts such as advanced physics, cloud variables, and drawing engines.  In addition to these new skills tested in barebones concept games, they are also encouraged to work on large scale and broader scope projects taking aspects of project management into consideration.  At this level there are a lot of different ways to program a desired behaviours and certain approaches to installing a system are more modular and easier to develop and maintain than others (e.g. don’t hardcode exactly what will happen into a sprite but instead have background code tracking changes and a general script in the sprite monitoring for these changes).

Technical Requirements

Basic Requirements:

  • A internet connection
  • Working Microphone and Speakers – We recommend a set of headphones or headset (which has been tested and is working) with an integrated microphone so that you can hear us and we can hear you as clearly as possible. If you do not have headphones or a headset, please ensure your child is in a quiet place – as long as they have speakers and a microphone and are in a quiet place it will be fine. Please reduce background noise or move to a quiet area for the benefit of all kids in the class. 
  • Optional: Webcam – Either external or built-in (many laptops have an integrated camera).
  • Laptop or desktop (not tablet or phone)
  • Keyboard and mouse
  • Chrome browser

Detailed System Requirements:

  • Broadband internet connection (ideally with at least 1.2Mbps download and 600Kbps upload speeds)
  • For Coding Classes: 4GB of RAM or more (<4GB RAM may work but may be unstable in some situations)
