While it’s important for all kids to learn how to code, there is evidence that shows it may be even more crucial for girls. When you look at the numbers, as of 2017 only 26% of all professional computing jobs were held by women. As of 2016, only 19% of women receiving Bachelor’s degree got theirs in computer and information sciences.
Numbers like these show the importance of getting more young girls interested in coding and computer science. As a parent, how do you that? Here are some tips.
- Empower Them. Many young girls may feel intimated by coding. But, with the right guidance and mentors, they can feel empowered. They can see that they cando it and will be more likely to try.
- Introduce Them to Powerful Women in Computer Science. Do some homework yourself and find women who are currently successful in the world of computer science. Tell your daughter about them and print articles to share. When they see other women who have made it, they can begin to feel as though they can do it too. If you can find someone locally who your daughter can speak to, that’s even better. This way they can ask questions and have an honest conversation with a professional.
- Show Them Coding in Their Everyday Lives. Many girls like to play video games but may not realize that coding is behind their characters and their screen worlds. This is a great way to spark an interest in the behind-the-scenes work that goes into making the video games they enjoy. When they begin to realize this, they may want to start learning how to code to make their own games and work on other projects.
- Find Organizations & Groups. There are many groups and programs that young girls can join to learn more about coding and to see how important it is. Other girls who are already involved can help lead the way and help introduce their peers to the world of coding.
When it comes to teaching coding and other STEM-related topics, MakerKids offers many programs for kids of all ages. At MakerKids, your child can learn more about how coding affects their everyday lives. They can also speak to mentors who can enlighten them about the importance of coding and how fun it is.
